1967年發行的Silk&Soul(絲綢靈魂)的專輯中，
她是爵士樂壇公認的"靈魂女祭司"，
十歲時的第一場古典鋼琴獨奏會，白人搶著來聽她的演奏，為此逼她的父母坐到後方去。
這種南方對待黑人的不平等態度，
讓她日後成為美國黑人平權運動的積極擁護者。
她後來演唱的歌曲總是提醒著人們對於社會上種種不平等的省思。
這首歌很短，歌詞也非常簡單，
但是卻有一股沈沉的力量，擊打著聽著的心。
